Why is there evil in the world? Listen carefully. There is a mother who is embroidering. Her son sitting on a low stool sees her work, but upside down. He sees the knots of the embroidery; the tangled threads, and says: “Mother, what are you doing? Your work is not at all clear?” Then the mother lowers the embroidery frame and shows the right side of her work. Each colour is in its place and the variety of threads form a harmonious design. So, we are seeing the reverse side of the embroidery. We are sitting on the low stool (GG, 106).

왜 세상에는 악이 존재하는가? 잘 들어라. 한 여인이 수를 놓고 있었다. 그녀의 아들은 낮은 의자에 앉아서 엄마가 놓고 있는 수의 뒷면을 보고 있었다. 아들은 뒤엉킨 실타래며 지저분한 실땀들을 보고 있다가 엄마에게 묻는다. "엄마, 뭐 하시는 거예요? 엄마가 하시는 일을 도무지 알 수가 없네요." 그러자 엄마는 수놓는 손을 낮게 하여 아들에게 아름답게 수놓아진 쪽을 보여준다. 각각의 빛깔들은 제자리에 있고 여러 가지 실들은 조화로운 디자인을 이루고 있는 것이다. 그렇다. 우리도 이 아이와 같이 수놓는 작업의 뒷면만을 보고 있는 것이다. 우리는 아주 낮은 의자에 앉아 있다 (GG, 106).
