“Let us begin today, my brothers, to do good, because up to now, we have done nothing.” These words, which the Seraphic Father, St. Francis, in his humility applied to himself, should be made ours, at the beginning of this new year. We truly have done nothing to date, or perhaps, very little; the years have followed one another and from beginning to end, we have never asked ourselves how we have spent them, whether there was something to be rectified, to be added or obliterated from our conduct. We have lived thoughtlessly, as if the Eternal Judge were not going to call us to Himself one day and ask us to account for our deeds and for the way we have spent our time. And yet, we must give an exact account of every moment, of every grace, of every holy inspiration, of every opportunity to do good. The slightest transgression of God’s holy laws, will be taken into consideration! (TN, Epist. IV, p. 963).

천사같은 아버지, 프란치스코 성인께서 겸손한 마음으로 자신에게 적용하신 이 말씀을, 이 새해의 시작에 우리 것으로 만들어야한다. 진실로 우리는 지금까지 거의 아무 것도 하지 못했다; 우리가 한 해를 어떻게 보냈는지, 우리 자신의 행위에서 무엇을 바로잡고 더하고 빼야할지 우리 자신에게 묻지도 않은 채 여러 해가 오고 갔다. 우리는 아무 생각 없이 살아왔다. 어느날 영원한 심판자께서 우리를 당신께로 부르시고 우리 행실과 더불어, 우리에게 주어진 시간들을 어떻게 보냈는지에 대해 설명을 요청하실 것이다. 우리는 모든 순간들과 모든 은총, 모든 거룩한 영감과 선행을 할 수 있었던 모든 기회들에 대하여 정확히 설명해야만 한다. 하느님의 거룩한 법을 조금이라도 어긴 것들은 그때 고려의 대상이 될 것이다!
